Fact Information

Poly-chlorinated biphenols (PCBs) are persistent contaminants in our food chain and are found in most food products.

Farmed Atlantic salmon have been found to contain quite low levels of PCBs that are 30 - 200 times lower than Canada Food Inspection Agency and USFDA tolerance levels.

Levels of PCBs will vary with the feed sources and between farming regions.  New farmed salmon feed development limiting the use of marine based oils and fishmeal has been shown to further decrease the level of these contaminants in farmed salmon.

Studies of contaminant levels in B.C. farmed salmon and wild salmon show that levels in B.C. farmed salmon are very low, and that B.C. farmed salmon is safe to eat at least once per week.
